Antique Native American Indian Trade Spontoon Blade Pipe Tomahawk Original
Price: US $1986.16
Offered is an antique, mid-1800\'s / Indian Wars era Native American pipe tomahawk. This rare spontoon style blade is hand forged with a screw-on bowl and made to resemble abison head. Most likely a Plains Indian weapon. The haft is made of a hardwood, probably ash, and has great age and patina from handling. There are some age cracks along the side of the wood from where the wood became dry and split. This does not affect the overallstrength of the haft and is more cosmetic than anything. After researching this blade, I found that there are other known \"buffalo head\" tomahawks in the National Museum collection and the Heye Foundation that are very similar. They are also shown in the top reference works on the subject. Although unusual, I believe this to be a very rare example. There is also a inlaid silverarrow on the reverse of the blade. The tomahawk is very well made, andbalances in your hand nicely as a real weapon should. The horns of the bison are forged on to the blade and then filed. Thetomahawk is impressive...it measures 24\" long, 11\" head, and the business end of the blade being 7.\"There is a small hole near the smoking end of the handle that used to have something tied or hanging off of it. When you un-screw the bowl, it has obviously been well smoked long ago and used. Tobacco residue was still on the threads when I took it off for the first time. If you puff on it it still draws air in nicely. The smoking end has what I believe are teeth marks whenlooked at closely. I welcome any and all questions and requests. I offer a 3 day inspection period so you are satisfied. Please check our other sales for more great historic western, ephemera, estate sale and sale finds!
