Antique Nippon Porcelain Moriage Dog Portrait Cabinet Plate c1890-1911
Up for your consideration is this beautiful Nippon porcelain Dog portrait cabinet plate. Measuring just under 10" in diameter, this plate is marked on the bottom with the blue "Maple Leaf Nippon" mark used by Morimura Bros. and dates from between 1890 and 1911. This is a fairly rare piece because dogs were not a typical subject matter in Nippon during this time period. Though I am not certain, I believe the dog in the portrait is a Greyhound. The plate is beautifully decorated with bands of greens, browns, large half flowers and thick moriage beading and scrolls. In fact, most of the surface of the plate other than the dogs face, has some sort of moriage decoration. I have included many photographs which show the beautiful details of this plate.
A similar example of this plate can be seen on page 217, plate 358, of "The Collector's Encyclopedia of NIPPON Porcelain" by Joan F. Van Patten. According to the books year 2000 price guide, this plate is valued at between $600 and $800 which has certainly increased since then.
The CONDITION of this lovely cabinet is EXCELLENT. Most importantly, there are no cracks or chips anywhere. I do see where one of the tiny green morige dots is missing along the top rim. There are also two white dots along the outside of the rim near the bottom of the plate where the paint is missing. There is a cord on the back of the plate for hanging if deasired.
