In this sale we have a rare metal chocolate mold in the shape of four separate rabbits that we have attributed to Germany. Estate found, this mold is heavy weighing over 4 lbs and measures approx. 9-1/4\" by 8\" by 1-3/4\". The mold consists of four rabbits, two on each of the two rows facing each other. Overall condition is good with no breaks or cracks, just wear that would commensurate with the age and use of the mold. Be sure to see all our photos for specifics. A Brief History of Chocolate Moulds as found on the valfa website (GREAT Site!)
Although first consumed in a variation of the recognizable form in Spain in the mid 1500s, today in chocolate industry has grown to a $50 billion a year business. Chocolate, as a form that we consume today, was, arguably, first brought to light in Germany at the beginning of the 17th century recognized as a medicine and restorative in a melted liquid form. In the mid 1600s, chocolate houses began to open, in London (1657), Germany (1673), and later Italy (1720).
Chocolate’s first transformation took place in Germany with Jan Jantz von Huesden opening his first chocolate shop, where noblemen would gather to drink the liquid chocolate. What resulted was Dresden becoming the center of the chocolate world after being the first city to produce milk chocolate in 1839 aided by Switzerland’s Rudolph Lindt inventing conchiering, which was the process of stirring the chocolate at an even temperature to refine it’s taste.
Recognizing the potential success of this liquid food, Fry & Sons were able to create the first solid form of chocolate a few short years later in 1847. As a solid, chocolate could more easily become available to those outside of the chocolate meccas by transporting the food. Combining the industrial success of manufacturing and distributing, chocolatiers would be able to work with artists in creating a piece of art that would more eagerly please the consumers by adding decorative detail.It is fitting that the transformation to how Chocolate was sold also came from Germany with Herman Walter in 1866 leading the mould making way followed shortly thereafter, in 1870 by Anton Reiche, who had been familiar with a copperplate mould making method from Létang Fils (who started in 1832). Reiche began to produce metal molds and packaging for toys, boxes, advertising plates and the use of tinplate for chocolate molds.
During this time, every European town had several chocolate shops. Competing for business, these shoppes would cast solid and hollow chocolate using the highly detailed moulds that were created by mouldmakers. Depicting stories, lore, and images of then-modern time, each mould offers a snapshot at that specific time in history, whether be through rabbits, Santas, or other figurines.
While most of the mould makers existed in Germany, they were forced to shut down during World War II and many of the moulds were buried to be saved from having to be melt down to make weapons for the war. The Hanes family of North Carolina have been researching and collecting these vintage moulds for over 30 years as Dad’s Follies. They are one of the foremost authorities on the subject of antique moulds in the world and they sell antique moulds on their web site and at antique shows.Over the years, chocolate moulds have gone through various changes since their origin. Most moulds today are composite plastic—as a combination of cost and the FDA outlawing the use of metal moulds for food products. is ALL we do for a living, husband and wife (Norb & Marie) working together, while we home school our kids on our farmette in Rural Delmarva. We have worked very hard to build our little business and it is very important to us. We try and do business the old fashioned way and have a rather simple outlook.

BUT... with \'s new star rating and the rate increases in the U.S. Postal rates we needed to define and explain our methods of business.
ONE - Who We Deal With
We sell and ship world wide to anywhere, so please email us for a quote to wherever you happen to be.
TWO - Shipping Charges
We charge shipping based on the USPS system, we will sometimes ship via courier if we can get it to you within the same time frame or faster. We add a reasonable cost for materials, normally that is $2.00 for regular sized packages. For small flat items $1.00. That covers the expense of boxes, envelopes, bubble wrap, peanuts, (We only use new packing materials, life is too short to scrounge through dumpsters). For larger items that take a larger more expensive box, we charge a little more, to cover the special box, example paintings or lamps. For oversized items or items that will take special attention to package, (Build a crate, wrap a zillion things individually, etc.), we ask you to email us for a quote on shipping prior to the sale ending. If you do not, we charge the same amount as if you did. In other words WE NEVER GOUGE OUR CLIENTS SHIPPING COSTS!!
THREE - International Shipping
We charge shipping based on the USPS international system. The rates follow the same guidelines as number two above, though for international customers we add an additional $1.00 to cover the extra paperwork involved in international shipping. If an amount goes over $50 in value we will only ship it with Priority or Express Mail, regardless how small an item. That allows for us to have international tracking. There is no tracking available on First Class Mail.
FOUR - Insurance
\'s policies no longer allows us to charge the client for insurance. But... we still apply insurance to any item that goes over $27.00 in value. We reserve the right to use the insurance carrier of our choice. Sometimes that is Postal or the Carrier\'s Insurance and sometimes that is a private insurance company such as DSI or U-PIC/Shipsurance. If we use a private insurance company the package will not be marked insured, but it will be.
FIVE - Methods of Payment Accepted
We aoffere by \'s rules and try and stay abreast of their changes. We accept Paypal. Paypal also accepts the major credit cards, or we also take Credit Cards Directly over the phone, (MC, VISA, DISCOVER, AMERICAN EXPRESS, CARTE BLANCHE, DINERS CLUB, JCB) Bottom line, whatever method is most convenient for you.
SIX - Time Frame To Pay
We ask all sales to be paid for in the fastest possible time frame. (This is all we do for a living and we need the money to pay the bills and buy more unique and fun items to put up on )
SEVEN - Shipping Time Frame
We make every effort to ship in a timely manner. We are home schooling the boys, listing tons of items, and as like any of us are just plain swamped, so we have to schedule a special time to pack and ship. We ship on a first paid, first shipped basis. (We do not ship any item until it has been paid and the funds have cleared.) With the ebb and flow of payments we manage to get everything out of the door within one week. If there is a rush, we will make every effort to work with you in getting it out of the door faster. As you can see from our response, we do not disappoint. OF COURSE, items that need special attention, crating, etc adds to the time frame of those items.
EIGHT - Local Pickup
Sometimes it makes sense to come by and pickup your items. Sometimes an item is just too big for any other option. If you\'ve arranged local pickup with us, you must pickup the item within 30 days otherwise it will be subject to storage fees or relisting.
