Up for offer is a rare early southern folk stoneware large short extremely squat buggy jug with runny dark brown to almost black alkaline glaze inside and out. We got this at an Estate Sale, but the maker and exact age is not known. Possibly North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia. I do know a buggy jug was made and designed to fit under a seat of a horse drawn carriage / wagon to provide water or moonshine on a long trip. These type of stoneware / pottery jugs are seldom seen these days and are considered rare / hard to find.
Please excuse any glares, white spots or shadows. The buggy jug is in Very good all original condition. It has a chipped mouth on one side, two shallow chips on the handle, a glaze flake on the shoulder, and two small glaze flakes on the other side of the mouth, but there are No other chips, cracks, nicks, hairlines, or repair. The jug measures approx. 8\" tall by 9\" wide at bulbous point and 7 1/2\" wide across the base. It also has an approx. 30\" circumference. The jug is not signed by the potter or marked with the capacity, but I suspect it to be a 1 gallon jug. Folks, this is a very good rare old Southern folk stoneware buggy jug and it would go wonderful in a collection or home.
