Description: A rare, large-sized handled Oyster Jar with RI Merchant Advertising, 1-Gallon capacity, New England origin, ca.1880’s. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased, sloping shoulder, wide mouth and applied strap handle. Stenciled on the body with bold, blue Cobalt: THE / J.A. BUDLONG / & SON CO. Shiny, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior.

Background: The Budlong Family ancestry traces it roots to the early settlers of the Providence Plantations. James A. Budlong operated a farm and provisions market. See Internet for further information on the firm.

Interesting Note: The D,L,O & G in “BUDLONG” appear to have been touched-up by the decorator prior to firing in the kiln. This extra step is indicative of the valued relationships between client and maker, in this case probably Franklin T. Wright in nearby Taunton, MA.

Condition: There are some faint and surface-only hairlines at the base (see close-ups), and a shallow chip on the inner mouth, as shown; otherwise in Very Good to Excellent, as-made condition with very strong color. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. This a very well-preserved RI Oyster Jar with attractive form and highly-uncommon 1-Gallon capacity. I would consider this a “commercial-size” Jar for perhaps a local bar or restaurant, rather than for home use. Displays brilliantly. The inner and outer rim diameters are 2-3/4” and 3-5/8”, respectively. Weighs 5.6 lbs.
