An American Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird decoration, 1-Gallon capacity, New England origin, ca.1850\'s. Impressed on the shoulder with a crisp, cobalt-washed stamp that reads: J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON, VT. This is the mark of Julius and Edward, running the family-owned manufactory roughly, 1850-1859. See Internet for further information on this well-respected firm.
Description: A well-potted, cylindrical form with eased shoulder and applied strap handle. Front features a signature Norton \"Bird on a Sprig\" decoration in the boldest of Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Very desirable and quite charming with tremendous Folk Art appeal. Tan, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior.
Condition: An amateur repair/restoration to the handle and spout, as shown. Also, a shallow flake on the base (see close-up, photo #11). The Norton Bird decoration, however, is outstanding with strong, glassy color and zero fry. About as good as it gets. Displays brilliantly as-is, or a potential show stopper with a little expert attention. See photos for complete details and close-ups and please consider them as part of the description. Measures approximately 7\"W x 11\"H overall; weighs 4.6 lbs.
