Description: An outstanding Early American Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird decoration, 1-Gallon capacity, New England origin, ca.1860. A well-potted, cylindrical form with eased shoulder and applied strap handle. Impressed with a cobalt-washed stamp on the shoulder: J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT. This particular mark was used only between 1859-1861. See Internet for further information on highly respected, family-run manufactory. Front features a Bird on a stylized Sprig in the boldest of Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Tan Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior.


Condition: Excellent to Nearly Mint (my highest rating) with very strong color, well-executed design and desirable 1-Gallon size. Typical base wear from age, use and handling noted. Also, a small, cobalt-covered production scar at the tail (see close-up, photo #10). No chips, cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. This Benny Bird about as good as you will ever find. Displays brilliantly; highly-appropriate for any collection, especially if condition is of utmost importance. See photos for complete details and please consider them as part of the description.
