An exceptional, decorated Stoneware Pitcher, 1-Gallon capacity, Pennsylvania origin, ca.1870. There is an impressed stamp on the shoulder that reads: COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG PA. This is the mark of partners, John Cowden and Isaac Wilcox, operating in Harrisburg roughly, 1863-1880. A well-potted, bulbous form with tooled, spouted rim and applied strap handle. Front features a large, signature Cowden & Wilcox Chrysanthemum Floral with additional fern-like floral above, executed in the boldest Brushed Cobalt. Albany Slip interior; shiny, Salt-Glazed exterior.


Condition: A clean, v-shape repair on the right side of the spout (see close-up, photo #9); otherwise Excellent. Displays brilliantly with strong, vibrant color. This C&W Pitcher will not disappoint. The base, body and rim diameters are approximately 5-3/4", 6-3/4" and 4-3/4", just over 5 lbs.
