Price: US $538.88

A 2-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Chicken Pecking Corn decoration, New York State origin, ca.1870. A well-potted, cylindrical form with tooled rim; the applied handle sheared off at some point. Impressed on the shoulder with a cobalt-washed stamp reading: NEW YORK / STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y., with a capacity designation above. This Upstate manufactory was in operation, roughly 1859-1885. Front features a large, slip-trailed Pecking Chicken on a stylized bed of Corn. Extra shading on the body, wing and tail  provides tremendous Folk Art appeal to this highly sought-after decoration. Shiny, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior.

Condition: Jug is sans handle, as noted; there is a horizontal hairline near the base (lower right, photos #9 & #10), a shallow scar on the body (left side), and some very small chips on the spout, as shown; otherwise Very Good with strong color and a well-proportioned decoration. Inherent glaze and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures approximately 9\"W x 14-3/4\"H overall; 9.2 lbs.
