Antique Stoneware: C. Crolius Ovoid Jug, Manhattan Wells, NY, Olive Green, c1815
Price: US $330.00

An early salt-glazed Stoneware Jug, approximate 1/2 Gallon capacity, New York origin, ca.1815. Well-potted, highly-Ovoid form with tooled, spout; handle not present. Shoulder bears a lightly-impressed and partially illegible oval stamp reading: C. CROLIUS / STONE-WARE / MANUFACTURER / Manhattan Wells, N.Y. Pieces bearing Clarkson\'s mark (1800-1838) are rare and highly sought-after by advanced collectors. See William Ketchum\'s \"American Stoneware\", p.62 for further information on the Crolius family pottery.

Condition: Wear with shallow chips on the rim and base, as shown. Inherent glaze and surface anomalies noted throughout. There is a large potstone in the neck; there is some slight movement, but it is firmly lodged. The handle, as previously noted, is missing, and the terminals are smooth. Wonderful Olive-Green coloration and very uncommon size. This 200-year-old Ovoid will feature quite prominently in any collection of Early American Stoneware. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures only 6\"W x 9-3/4\"H overall with a base diameter of 4\"; weighs 3.75 lbs.
