Description: An early Cobalt Decorated Stoneware Jug with Primitive Floral Design, 2-Gallon capacity, Bennington, Vermont, ca.1835. A successful, Highly-Ovoid form with tooled spout and applied strap handle. A crisp, cobalt-washed stamp impressed on the shoulder reads: L. NORTON & SON. This particular mark was used between 1833-1841 by Luman (Sr.) and his son (Julius) at their Old (aka “East”) Bennington kiln. See Internet for further information on the well-respected family manufactory. Front features a stylized Floral or Orchid in bold, brushed Cobalt Slip.

Condition: This Norton Ovoid survives in Very Good to Excellent, essentially as-made condition. There are a few faint surface lines; notably on the base, as shown. Also, areas of discoloration on the body. It has not been cleaned; it may lighten up a bit, but cannot guarantee all will completely disappear, due to age. Inherent surface, glaze and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. Overall, an exceptional early Norton Ovoid that will not disappoint.
