Antique Stoneware: English Crock, Doulton & Watts, Lambeth, ca.1840, Rare Form:
An exceptional English Stoneware Cooler or Wine Crock, ca.1840. Wonderful, Ovoid/Oval form with two-tone brown "Treacle" glaze and profusely decorated with applied Grapevine accents throughout. The center Crest (Royal Coat of Arms) depicts a unicorn and lion flanking a crowned shield. The top bears the mark "1"; perhaps a size designation, but the capacity appears significantly larger than 1Gal. Also, a crisply-impressed oval stamp that reads: DOULTON & WATTS / LAMBETH POTTERY / LONDON. This dates the Cooler to between 1826-1854, when John Doulton and John Watts ran this well-respected manufactory; the firm would later become known as Royal Doulton. The early D&W wares are the most sought-after by collectors. There are some typical imperfections in the making, and an area of professional restoration on the upper portion of the bunghole (see close-ups); otherwise mint. The spigot is early and likely original; the handle has an impressed stamp that reads: J. FELL & CO. / W. HAMPTON, with a 6-point star hallmark. This is a wonderful example that displays brilliantly; a great addition to any Antique Stoneware collection. I would consider this one quite rare. See photo set for complete details and close-ups; please consider them as part of the description. Measures approximately 9-1/2"W x 10-1/2"H x 6-3/4"D overall. The spigot extends 1-3/4" from the base (bung) opening. Weighs just under 8 lbs.Offered with absolutely No Reserve. Ships fully insured to the highest buyer, anywhere in the lower 48. Domestic (US) buyers with Paypal accounts only, please. Payment is expected within 3 days. No International shipping; no exceptions. Good Luck, and be sure to bookmark my other sales, listed and ending daily. Thanks.
