An exceptional Decorated Stoneware Crock, 3-Gallon capacity, New England origin, mid-1800's. Impressed with a cobalt-washed stamp below the rim: J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT. This is the rare, 2-year Norton mark, only used between 1859-1861. See Bill Ketchum's "American Stoneware", pp.42-44 for further information. Entire front features a very impressive Floral Bouquet decoration in bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Well-executed and perfectly proportioned (see close-ups).Condition: Some minor imperfections in the making, a faint y-shape surface hairline (front, upper left), and a shallow chip on the left handle; otherwise excellent. This Norton Crock will not disappoint and will feature prominently in any collection of Antique Stoneware or Americana.
