An exceptional 1Gal. Stoneware Jug, Bennington, Vermont, ca.1860. The cobalt-washed impression is fairly light, but J. Norton & Co. wares were made only between 1859-1861, when cousins Julius and Edward ran the family business; a relatively small production window. Front features a well-executed Bird on a Sprig design in extra bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt.Condition: A shallow chip on the base (lower rear), otherwise in remarkable, original condition with no hairlines cracks or repairs. Stack marks on the shoulder and some roughness on the rim noted for descriptive accuracy. Fitted cork in spout is definitely old, but not original. See photos for complete details and close-ups.
