Antique Stoneware: Norton Bird Jug w/ Cobalt Pheasant, XRare 1.5G, Bennington VT
Price: US $2200.00
An exceptional Stoneware Jug, Bennington, Vermont, mid-1800\'s. Julius and his cousin, Edward, used the J&E Norton mark from 1850-1859; the stamp and capacity mark on the shoulder are washed with cobalt. Front features an impressive Thin-Tailed Pheasant perched on a Stump and looking back over its shoulder to the left. Artistically executed in glassy, extra bold Slip-Trailed Cobalt; there is no fry on this decoration. Of greater importance is the 1.5 Gallon capacity with this particular design. It is documented in \"The Birds of Bennington\" (B.Leder/F.Cesana, 1991, pg.69) as \"Rare\" with only 4-9 known pheasant examples of this size; I have only seen one.Condition: Some light discoloration right side, lower; otherwise in remarkable, as-made condition with no cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. A small clay separation on the upper handle terminal, and two stone pings on the rear side are for descriptive accuracy. Highly-appropriate for advanced collector of American Stoneware. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures approximately 8\"W x 12\"H overall; 6.6 lbs. Offered without reserve to give all interested a complete fair chance of winning. Ships fully insured to the highest buyer, anywhere in the lower 48. Domestic (US) buyers with Paypal only, please.
