Antique Stoneware: VT Ovoid Jug w/ Cobalt Tulip, L. Norton, Bennington, ca.1825
Price: US $258.00
An early, Cobalt-Decorated Ovoid Jug, 2Gal. capacity, Bennington, Vermont, ca.1825. The shoulder bears a very crisp, cobalt-washed impression that reads: L. NORTON & Co. / BENNINGTON. This is one of the earliest Norton marks, used by the founder's own son, Luman, for a very brief 5-year production window (1823-1828). Further information can be found in Bill Ketchum's "American Stoneware", pp.41-42. Bennington wares bearing this stamp are extremely rare. This Ovoid features a very primitive Tulip in Brushed Cobalt. Excellent overall form with tooled spout and applied strap handle. There is a cork firmly seated in the mouth; very old, but probably not original.Condition: A shallow rim chip (right side), and some typical imperfections in the making; otherwise excellent. No hairlines, cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. Displays beautifully; a highly-appropriate addition to any collection of Early American Stoneware. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description.
