The History

This beautiful piece was made during the Art Nouveau Period. The Art Nouveau period was famous for it\'s timeless handcrafted design work! The Art Nouveau Era was also called \"La Belle Epoque\" which in French translates to \"A Beautiful Time\".

During the Art Nouveau period, organic world based designs were popular, long flowing lines, hair, vines, or bug types of jewelry. This piece is a classic example of this period in jewelry history.

The Grand Tour was the standard European vacation of the Georgian and Victorian eras. The opportunity it gave for studying culture, architecture and art made it a tradition, especially for the upper classes. And what better souvenir of this long trip than pieces of native souvenir jewelry such as Italian cameos, mosaic and pietra dura pieces. Pieces often also had historical inspirations from the remnants of Pompeii to the pyramids of Egypt, cultural learning was a focal point of the grand tour, the process of remembrance spilled over into jewelry souvenirs.

In the late 19th century, Carl Fabergé elevated this craft to new heights by marrying guilloché engraving with enameling. This successful integration of metal and glass appeared soon after Michael Perchin became head-goldmaster for Fabergé in 1886. Under his direction, guilloché engraving became increasingly complex. After firing, each piece was polished by hand using a wooden wheel covered with chamois leather. These techniques were difficult and time-consuming, but Fabergé’s craftsmen made them seem like child’s play.

The trend was soon adopted by other great jewelry houses of the time, including Bolin, Cartier, Chaumet, Boucheron and Tiffany & Co. Jeweled clocks, watch cases, cigarette cases, cigar cutters, picture frames, cane heads, parasol handles, hatpins, vanity cases, combs, mirrors, lorgnettes, pens, buckles and matching button sets are just a few of the tempting trinkets in guilloché enamel that proliferated from 1890 to 1920.

Rose Cut Diamonds have been made for hundreds of years. They really gained popularity during the 1700\'s and were used until about 1840 when they were replaced with the Mine Cut Diamond. Rose Cut Diamonds are unique in the way that they are one of the last types of stones to feature hand cleaved facets on the stone. These stones are meant to look rough as a stone cutter would hand cleave the facets by cutting the diamond with another diamond. They are highly prized and sought after in today\'s market due to their rarity as most of these stones were lost or re-cut into more modern cuts.

This pin was bought from an English Estate, and then brought to the U.S.!

The Piece

This brooch includes four diamonds placed within its guilloche enamel design! The four diamonds are expertly rose cut and feature facets that reflect light beautifully off of their surface.

The enamel design in this piece is made to depict a dramatic Grecian man. The man is incredibly detailed with fair skin, blonde hair, and a white robe. The man is complimented by the blue background placed behind him that is decorated with intricatedetails and gives the piece an incredible contrast.

The craftsmanship in this brooch is completely handmade and includes classic Art Nouveau Era craftsmanship throughout. The design includes a thick yellow gold setting that holds the enamel design securely. There is also applied gold work within the enamel designs that are carved to look like incredible flowers, a band around his head, and a small part of the designs attire!

If desired, a jeweler could easily add a bale for this to be worn as a pendant. It can also be worn as a scarf clip of sorts.

The brooch measures 1\" in diameter and is finished off with an enclosed style pin backing that works perfectly.

Antique and Vintage jewelry is disappearing at alarming rates. Unfortunately, most of the jewelry from this time period has been lost or melted down over the years, please don\'t miss your chance to own this special piece of history!
