The cabochon cut rubies are arranged in a floral shape with four rubies surrounding each pearl. The rubies have a semi-translucent pink-red hue with natural inclusions, creating a beautiful play of color when light shines through them. The freshwater pearls showcase their naturally off-round and polished shape with a lustrous white-to-grey hue. There are six clusters of ruby and pearl flowers, with the cluster at the top of the brooch being the smallest and the cluster at the bottom of the brooch being the largest. An 18k white gold stem supports the flower clusters and hand-crimped 18k rose gold leaves. The contrasting hues of gold perfectly accent the hues of the different stones. This brooch is very large and would look great worn in a variety of ways, including on a lapel, hat, scarf, or other form of accessory. While lovely as a brooch, this piece would look wonderful if converted into a pendant by your local jeweler. The entire brooch comes together in a classic fruit salad spray design from the Retro period of the Art Deco era. Don\'t miss your chance to become a part of the history of this piece.
Damage: Age appropriate wear. There is minor wear and flea bites on some of the rubies, but this is hardly noticeable and does not affect wear.

The Art Deco era is famous for being the \"Gatsby\" or \"Roaring Twenties\" era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand.
Retro jewelry refers to pieces created in the 1940s and 1950s. This was a period during which jewelry designers were largely influenced by the changes stemming from World War II. These designs reflect an infusion of futuristic vision with elements inspired by preceding periods, encompassing a variety of gemstones, shapes, and materials. Materials used commonly in Retro jewelry are gold, gold alloys, and silver as the wartime put a restriction on the used of platinum. Designs can be masculine, geometric and modern, or softer, more feminine and floral.
During the Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras, spray style jewelry became immensely popular. Spray jewelry often includes precious stones and metalwork that fans out in multiple directions to create ornate and attention-grabbing sparkle.
Fruit salad jewelry is any piece of jewelry which resembles a bowl of fruit salad and often includes multi-colored stones, pearls, glass. They can be opaque or translucent but are almost always vibrantly colorful.
Rubies are one of the four precious gemstones and are prized for their pink to blood red colors. The most valued hue of ruby is called blood-red, or pigeon blood, for the bright, rich hue it exhibits. The color of a ruby comes from the element chromium. Rubies have adorned royal and religious jewelry for centuries and were especially esteemed in Asian countries like China and India, where they were thought to bring good fortune. Rubies are graded by color, clarity, cut, and carat. Rubies are often also evaluated on the basis of their geographic origin.
Freshwater pearls are a special type of pearl that are created by freshwater mussels and have been used in jewelry as far back as Medieval times. The largest source for natural freshwater pearls at that time was the Holarctic Freshwater Pearl Mussel, which was native to Scotland. This species is now endangered, and most freshwater pearls must be cultured. Unlike cultured saltwater pearls, freshwater pearls are not bead-nucleated and are therefore typically less round. Instead of using a bead, a small square of mantle tissue is cut from a donor mussel\'s inner lining and inserted into the lining of the harvesting mussel to instigate pearl formation. The unique harvesting technique makes freshwater pearls purely composed of nacre. These pearls are valued for their whimsical shapes and wide range of colors. The unique character of freshwater pearls is found in their distinctive texture and the warmth of their luster. All packages are sent via USPS First Class Insured Mail unless another shipping option is chosen by the buyer.
