“Apple Computer, Pole Piece, Catch 00521” by Ronald G. Wayne, for Steve Jobs and Apple Computer, January 1977

One document, 8.5 by 11 inches, in a display frame. This is a design rendering copy created in December 1976 and January 1977, and in the possession of Apple founder Ronald Wayne since that time. The larger format original, of which this is a smaller copy produced by Ron, was a concept drawing for the new Apple ][ computer. Wayne was directed by Steve Jobs to design the case. Jobs paid Wayne $1500 for the design job. Jobs and Wayne had worked together at Atari, before the start of Apple, and Wayne was chief of engineering in charge of case design and build for Atari’s games. There were many different housing designs used for Atari games, whether for single or multiple players, so Jobs looked to Wayne for his expertise and experience in doing the same for the newest Apple computer to be introduced. Wayne delivered the finished design job to Jobs in January 1977, but retained his own set of copies. Most of Wayne’s copies were sold as a collection at Christie’s New York in December 2014, but there was a handful of duplicates which Wayne retained. This is one of those duplicates. Since the documents were not originally signed by Wayne, he has now added his autograph to this document, and stamped it with his personal impression stamp to help authenticate it. In addition, the purchaser will receive a separate document in which Wayne describes this drawing to authenticate it, which is also signed and stamped.

Any Apple design document is rare, since Steve Jobs and Apple Computer kept tight control over the company archives over the years. Jobs was known for his strict enforcement of company information and secrets. When he returned to Apple in 1998, he donated the early Apple archive to Stanford University. This item is also rare since Ronald Wayne, who is 80 years old, retained very little from his work with Apple. After this sale, he will have no Apple items left. Included with this lot will be a copy of the book The Apple Collection, a privately published book, which has a section on the Ron Wayne archive.

The photos here include one showing Ron Wayne at about the time he co-founded Apple Computer, and another showing him when he worked at Lawrence Livermore Labs.

50% of the sale price will go to charity. The designated charity is the ALS Association, dedicated to Lou Gehrig’s disease. There is price on this item. It will sell for the highest price offer.

My whole life, I\'ve been a treasure hunter. Growing up in the 1970s, I often made my discoveries through the local newspaper classified ads. That was my best source to locate vintage cars, and those little ads even led to a trip to Honduras to hunt for gold nuggets. Ten years ago, a tiny classified ad in the Washington Post for a sheriff’s sale indicated the sale would include the first Apple computer. I was able to purchase that 1976 Apple-1, which led me to write the book The First Apple. My book research included tracking down friends of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who’d worked in the home and garage of the Jobs family in the beginning days of Apple. I also befriended the 3rd founder of Apple, Ronald G. Wayne. During my research on the book, I acquired a 2nd Apple-1 from the family of the man who’d bought it new. I loved the story of Joey Copson and his bright green machine, so it became part of my book.

I\'ve decided to sell my Apple collection, and some was sold at Christie’s New York in December. I have a friend and employee diagnosed with ALS seven years ago. He continues to work with me to this day. That experience has led me to earmark some proceeds of the sale to the ALS Association.
