Price is for ONE PAIR (2 items)of Spall Blocker® soft inserts.Spall is when a bullet explodes into tiny fragments when hitting your steel plate at near a perpendicular degree angle. It can also happen on the BACK of the plate when higher energy rounds hit or a second round hits in the same spot, sending metal spall from the plate out into your body. Ricochet is when pieces, or even the whole bullet deflect off a steel plate when hitting at a sharper angle. These 10x12\" soft inserts aredesigned to go inyour platepocketsIN FRONT of YOUR steel SAPI plates to mostlyeliminate spalland reducericochets, and an additional pair can gobehind your plates IF you aren\'t using soft IIIa armor behind them (these are not covers). They stop the bullet fragments exploding off after hitting the steel to keep them from hitting you or your nearby buddy. They do not provide any protection used alone. Front plates are particularly dangerous because of being close to yourcarotid artery.All steel plates are prone to this problem. Spall Blockers work for many shots, but then you can replace with new ones to continue using your steel. These are also needed behind CERAMIC plates is you are not using them over soft armor. The ceramic fractures when shot and can cause injury without other protection. These are very thin and add only 5 ounces for the pair. Made ofthe sameKevlar as in the level IIIa inserts(10 times stronger than steel)and ballistic nylon. Testing shows 1 layer stops most spall, but these are 5 layers, (ballistic inserts are 30 layers) to stop more spall andalso reduce ricochets.What you will receive is exactly what is described. These need to be in a regular pocket to be in close contact with your plate to work well and stop side spall. Carriers using just a strap to holdyour plate (such as some Condor vests)don\'t work as well.You can duct tape them to your plates to use in these strap type holders. Nothing will stop all ricochets, that is why steel is not used by military or police, but these stop the majorityof the problem. (Point Blank and Second Chance add 1 layer to their steel platesand says it willstop spall).
