~ 1938 ZENITH BAKELITE TUBE RADIO - (BLACK DIAL) MODEL 6D311 ~

For your consideration is another Gem offered to you from theRadio-Cafeand is one of the most spectacular ZENITH ICON radios ever designed! A 1938 Model 6D311 bakelite tube radio in beautiful condition with no cracks or chips and fully restored inside and out just waiting to be enjoyed by the new owner. Zenith came out with a few variations of this set showcasing different cosmetic details from one another. Later versions had top handles, enclosed bakelite backing, gold dial scale, black plastic dial pointer, white, brown, or black cabinets, etc, etc. This version is the highly sought afterRARE BLACK DIAL VERSIONwith the COPPERzenith facade and BRASSdial pointer making it a true classic among radio collectors. The 6D311was one of Zenith\'s most adventurous designed radios by famous designer Robert Budlong andwas one of Zenith\'s first bakelite so-called \"midget\" models.

This gem plays great with excellent reception and nice tone. The original speaker cone was badly damaged so I reconed it (see pic #7). It uses a long wire antenna (included) for reception and a center knob for on/off/volume and outer ring knob for tuning. A 6D311 recently ended on for $480 which had a nasty long crack on one side and even the wrong front knob that was stated as original lol (FYI, Zenith only used one kind of knob for the 6D311 for the front and that being the popular \"Z\" top-hat knob.) All the cosmetics on this set are original except the new crystal clear dial lens and fabricated backing. You would be hard pressed to find a nicer 6D311 black dial set like this one in this kind of condition fully restored.

The extreme \"design in motion\" of this cabinet is a real treat to look at in person. It was way ahead of its timeexhibitinggorgeous curves,wrap-around louvers, and the classic half moon dial. The contrast between the classy brass dial pointer and copper facade was a nice added design touch on this black dial version (gold dial version used a black plastic pointer). There\'s a total of 20 individual pics to look at and different stages of the restoration process for your viewing pleasure.

The beautiful lightly marbled bakelite cabinet has been professionally polished with my ALL natural process using NO black shoe polish tricks to make the bakelite look darker,NO car polish wet look tricks,NO caked on junk, sprays, poly coats, saturation tactics to make the bakelite appear darker,or any other artificial enhancers. My photos represent the accurate bakelite color in different lighting with NO software touchups! It takes many hours through several stages to complete this natural process but when it\'s all said and done what you get is a pure natural bakelite shine just how it looked from the factory. I go the extra mile and make sure every square inch is cleaned using special hand-made pic tools, toothbrushes, and Q-tips(no black sharpie marker tricks used here folks). I\'ve been doing natural bakelite polishing the same way for 20 years now and do notcut corners or take short cuts with my cleaning & polishing method.. nothing but lots of time and plenty of elbow grease.

Just think of the many events taking place that were most likely heard on this set in 1938 such as... Hitler seizes control of German Army & puts Nazi in key posts then his troops enter Austria - Joe Louis KO\'s Max Schmeling at 2:04 of the 1st round at Yankee Stadium - 10th Academy Awards, \"The Life of Emile\" Spencer Tracy & Luise Rainer win - Boeing 314 Clipper flying boat 1st flown (Eddie Allen) - Japan declares war on China - Superman 1st appears in DC Comics Series issue #1 - Orson Welles panics the USA with the broadcast of HG Wells \"War of the Worlds\".

Keep in mind, this antique vacuum tube radio is not a boom box, solid state radio,or any other modern type radio. It uses vacuum tube technology which can produce audio interference caused by many different things such as florescent lighting, energy saving bulbs, kitchen appliances,etc,etc... so placement of the radio is very important to avoid any possible audio interference. And like many other electronic devices,.. when not in use the radio should be unplugged to prevent any damage during electrical storms.

I\'ve been collecting & restoring tube radios since 1987,and have sold well over 500 tube radios world wide. I spent 20 years as a Machine Specialist in the Aerospace & Injection Molding fields. Having this type of background has given me the experience & high standards that I try to maintain in my radio restoration work as well. My experience includes: custom wood refinishing, all natural bakelite polishing, electronic restoration, and radio dial cover molding. With my radio descriptions you get a factual description and I prefer to stay away from the sugar coated phrases such as... \"near mint\",\"normal age related wear\",\"museum quality\",\"doesn\'t get any better\",\"completely flawless\",best of the best\"unmolested\",\"mint\", or all the bla bla the reader has to weed through before even getting to the actual item description. My item descriptions always starts right at the top and with the important restoration details listed below it.

A special thanks to all of my customers and fellow radio restorers who I\'ve had the pleasure of doing business with throughout the last 25 years and to all of our service men & women who I proudly support in helping to keep this great country free!It gives me great satisfaction to be able to bring these wonderful antique tube radios back to life for future generations to enjoy! Thanks for looking and may God Bless our Troops serving around the world!
