4 BLACK THEMED ORIGINAL VICTORIAN TRADE CARDS

A selection of 4 different victorian trade cards, each with a African American theme.

1) A YEAR BOTH HAPPY AND GAY: Chef holding fish, black man in minstrel costume. It appears to be a salesman’s sample as the text reads:

A YEAR BOTH HAPPY AND GAY

The biter is bitten as often has been

The case as we very well know

And Sam who such trick played on

_______________ Cookery Service

Roars out in his anguish “Oh! Oh”

Reverse blank. CONDITION: Excellent. Glean and bright with quarter inch rust line on upper right margin. Never Pasted.

2. WHEN I WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS: Black man laughing surrounded by group of white woman. Reverse blank. CONDITION: Excellent. Clean and bright. Never Pasted.

3. A HAPPY NEW YEAR: Small boy being held up by black man in a Sailor’s uniform. Reverse blank. CONDITION: Excellent. Never Pasted.

4.DR. THOMAS ECLECTRIC [sic] Oil: Young girl sitting and being held by Black figure. Reverse has text about the \"Eclectric\" oil. The card has a stain on the back, perhaps from being pasted into a scrapbook. Card was distributed by W. B. Avery Forest Dale, Vt. via a rubber stamp to that effect. Front is clean and bright.

All cards date from 1880 to 1900 and are lithographs. Victorian trade cards were promotional items given out by stores. Some contained advertising. They were collected in albums, though many escaped being pasted.
