Blue CATALINA ISLAND pottery low bowl with pinch handlesDESCRIPTION: This stylish Catalina Island pottery bowl is a product of the Catalina Clay Products Company, and was made in Avalon, California, on Catalina Island. Its white clay base indicates that it was made between 1932 and 1937, the second five years of operation of the company. (From 1927 to 1932, the company used red clay that was mined from the island itself to produce their wares. However, the red clay proved to be too brittle, so in 1932 the company began importing white clay from the mainland for its products.)I really like the matte “Catalina Blue” glaze of this piece, which exhibits some random but beautiful dripping effects around the sides. The low shape and “pinch” type handles give it a look that blends well with Mission and early California style furniture.Though this bowl may have originally been listed in company catalogs as an outdoor ashtray, I think it would make a beautiful planter for low-growing cacti or succulents, or displaying small rocks and minerals of interest. Of course, it would also look great filled with fruit, or to float some camellia, gardenia, or magnolia flowers. This bowl comes from my personal collection of California pottery. I’ve enjoyed using and looking at it for about 20 years, and now it’s time to pass it along to another appreciative home.Measures 9 inches across and 2 inches high. Incised CATALINA ISLAND in block letters at the extremities of the base. When flipped over, the lower half of the letters for the word CATALINA are visible at the top of the base ring, and the upper half of the letters for ISLAND are visible at the bottom of the base ring.
