Description:
A finely hand crafted Indian Madras silver card tray, embossed and hand chased in high relief in the \'Swami\' manner with circular panels of Shiva in various poses, surrounded by scrolling floral foliate motifs, surrounded by a stiff leaf border, dating to the 19th century, circa 1880.
Swami style Indian silver, depicting deities and religious processions, is said to be inspired by the bas-reliefs on the famousMeenakshi Ammantemple in southern India.This style of decoration typically originates from Madras, and this piece is of a fine enough quality to be compared to the famous firm P. Orr & Son, the most important silversmith firm in Colonial South India, reputed to be the largest and best appointed establishment of its kind.
There are no silver marks, as is often the case with Indian silver, but the metal tests as fine silver, and is a good thick gauge.

Condition:
In very good antique condition, clean and ready to use or display. There are a couple of minor scratches to the underside centre. Please see the images provided which complement this description.
