Very Rare and very attractive, original ca1880 Chromolithograph Point of Sale Advertising Sign / Charger for J. P. Lorillard\'s \"Climax Plug\" Tobacco.
This fantastic Chromolithograph Advertising Sign measures approx. 19 1/2\" in diameter and is printed on a VERY heavy weight, coated paperboard stock. The sign features an image of a beautiful, young woman (surely she is \"Rebecca\") with deep brown eyes wearing a clasp in the form of a tobacco dressed in a gauzy gown that exposes her lower legs, bare shoulder and just a hint of her left breast. She stands at a Classical style fountain on a pillared portico filling a glass with the water flowing from a shell held over the head of a cupid figure. There are white doves, a potted lily and a low, upholstered bench in the view. Text in the image area of the Charger reads “Climax Plug Tobacco / P. Lorillard & Co. / Red Tin Tag”. The words “Climax Plug Tobacco” repeat around the border of the Charger.
The image on this wonderful Sign / Charger has a classical Roman or Greek “feel” and, although the Charger does not carry a lithographer’s mark, the chromolithography is of the very highest quality. The photos below do not do justice to this beautiful and early piece of American Chromolithograph Advertising.
As stated above, the Charger is made of a VERY heavy and thick (over 1/4” thick), coated paperboard stock which is shaped to form a shallow “dish”. The Sign is in very good, original condition overall and displays nicely. The chromolithograph colors are rich and warm and stunningly beautiful. The central image area is very well preserved with some light and unobtrusive soiling and some scattered and tiny surface blemishes. There is a small hole at 12 o’clock on the border just above the image area where a tack was likely used to mount the Charger on a wall. There is also some soiling and some light edge wear to the rolled rim but overall the Sign / Charger is well preserved and displays beautifully.
