Price: US $889.47
Very rare and original ca1913 \"Red Raven\" Splits, Tin Lithographed Advertising Serving Tray featuring a wonderful image a young child retrieving a bottle of \"Red Raven Aperient Water\" - the early 20th century cure for a hangover!! Known as the \"Papa Has a Headache\" Tray to collectors, this beautiful piece of tin litho advertising is highly sought after!

This rare and charming, Tin Litho Patent Medicine Advertising Tray measures 12\" in diameter and features a image of a young child - \"naked as a jay-bird\" - climbing on top of a case of Red Raven Bottles to reach a bottle that is on a sideboard for \"Papa\". The trade mark \"Red Raven\" is perched atop another case of Red Raven Splits. Text within the image area reads simply “Papa Has a Headache”. Text on the raised rim reads \"Red Raven / Ask The Man\". The Tray carries the mark of the manufacturer - Charles M. Shonk of Chicago.

Red Raven aperient water, was distributed in the United States by Duquesne Distribution Company of Pennsylvania from about 1899 to 1913, and then by the Red Raven Corporation until the 1930ʼs. It was basically advertised as a cure for the hangover - hence the \"Papa Has a Headache\" line. A liquid laxative, Red Raven bottled in splits was sold by the case or individually primarily through liquor wholesalers and retailers. Duquesne claimed that they were the first producers of the “split” bottle form – basically a size that would hold enough purgative for one personal dose, about 1/5th of a quart. Supposedly, one dose of Red Raven cured headache, indigestion, gout, gall-stones, and any number of uncomfortable maladies caused by over-indulgence. It was marketed as a cure-all, but was basically a common saline laxative, with some sodium bicarbonate to settle the stomach. Additional sodium compounds may have acted as electrolytes, possibly helping the drinker remain hydrated, but abuse of saline laxatives could lead to serious dehydration and other maladies.

This very rare and charming, ca1913 Red Raven Splits Advertising Serving Tray is not a reproduction, reissue or restrike but is an original ca1913 Serving Tray manufactured by Charles M. Shonk for the bottler to advertise their Red Raven hangover cure.

This rare and original, early 20th century Tin Lithograph Patent Medicine Advertising Tray displays beautifully and is in very good condition. There are no significant scratches or scuffs and the only surface loss is to small areas of the rim. The colors are bright and vibrant and while the surface does have some overall crazing, there are only a couple of small spots of soiling. The surface is stable and there is no flaking or surface loss. Overall the Tray displays very nicely. Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the \"Detailed Seller Rating\" Star System:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 \"packing fee\" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.

We have NEVER requested response from our customers as we were taught that \"fishing for compliments\" was impolite but the new Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller\'s \"Star\" rating. A monthly average of \"4.6 Stars\" (in any one of the four \"Star\" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional Fees - that\'s $400 above what we would pay if we had a \"4.8 Star\" average in all 4 \"Star\" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the \"Star\" rating system and remember that a \"5 Star\" rating is the only way we can qualify for \'s fee reduction program. ,
