Captain Sir RICHARD F. BURTON

LONDON: Tylston and Edwards: 1893. [published date: 1893]. Rare Memorial edition. In two volumes. 8vo. 8.5\" x 6.0\" inches (LxB). Pp. xxviii, [3], [1 (blank)], 436 & xii, [3], [1 (blank)], 479, [1 (blank)] pages + frontispiece portrait of Lady Burton in volume I, chromolithographic frontispiece of an Arab in full folk dress in volume II, 5 chromolithographic plates, 9 tinted lithographic plates, 28 illustrations in the text, coloured folding map, 3 folding plans, original publisher\'s gilt decorated black cloth binding with gilt lettering on spines & gilt vignettes on the front boards. Sir RICHARD F. BURTON was a British author and explorer & this account of his own attempt at a Hajj, or Muslim journey to Mecca. Though not Muslim himself, Burton\'s years spent in British India as a soldier in the army familiarized him with Muslim customs and behavior. He came up with the idea of making a Hajj while traveling disguised among Sindhi Muslims, and prepared and studied extensively for the trip, even getting circumcised to further prevent discovery. Rare Memorial edition of Burton\'s most famous, and most important, work, being an account of his surreptitious entry into the holy sites of Islam. According to Penzer, and to countless readers since, this is \"one of the greatest works of travel ever published.\" Burton was one of the first westerners to enter the Arab holy cities and to accomplish this he had to assume the character and costume of a Persian Mirza, a wandering Dervish, and a \"Pathan\" born of Afghan parents. An excellent copy of Burton\'s account of his disguised penetration of Islam\'s holiest shrine. While Burton was not the first non-Muslim to make the journey to Mecca, his account is the most well-known of the time, and it is the work which made him famous. Presented here in 1st edition, this harrowing true tale will delight fans of Burton and his work.A classic work. Complete as issued. Captain Sir Richard Francis BurtonKCMGFRGS (19 March 1821 – 20 October 1890) was a Britishgeographer, explorer, translator, anddiplomat. He was known for his travels and explorations within Asia, Africa and the Americas as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. According to one count, he spoke 29 European, Asian and African languages.[1]Burton\'s best-known achievements include travelling in disguise toMecca, an unexpurgated translation of One Thousand and One Nights (also commonly called The Arabian Nights in English afterAndrew Lang\'s abridgement), bringing the Kama Sutra to publication in English, and journeying withJohn Hanning Speke as the first Europeans led by Africa\'s greatest explorer guide,Sidi Mubarak Bombay, utilizing route information by Indian and Omani merchants who traded in the region, to visit theGreat Lakes of Africa in search of the source of theNile. Burton extensively criticized colonial policies (to the detriment of his career) in his works and letters. He was a prolific and erudite author and wrote numerous books and scholarly articles about subjects includinghuman behaviour, travel, falconry, fencing, sexual practices andethnography. A unique feature of his books is the copious footnotes and appendices containing remarkable observations and unexpurgated information. He was a captain in the army of theEast India Company serving in India (and later, briefly, in theCrimean War). Following this he was engaged by theRoyal Geographical Society to explore the east coast of Africa and led an expedition guided by the locals and was the first European to seeLake Tanganyika. In later life he served as Britishconsul in Fernando Po,Santos, Damascus and, finally,Trieste. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was awarded aknighthood (KCMG) in 1886.
