Sterling silver medal awardedby the South Carolina Inter-State & West Indian Expositionto the Lane Mfg. Co. in Montpelier, Vermont. Medal is approx. 2 1/2" in diameter and was manufactured by the Gorham Co.
The medals had to be paid for by the recipient of the award and could get the silver medal in either silver plated bronze or solid sterling silver. This medalhas toned a deep gray and has been kept in it's box of issue since it was received from Gorham.Iknow of only one other medal made from sterling silver. It was offered by an antique dealer in Charleston several years ago.
Another reason that probably makes any medals from this Exposition scarce is the fact that the recipient could also just get a certificate printed on vellum for the cost of $1. It is not known the number of actual medals that were produced since the Gorham archives were purged of records some years ago.
The box is mostly intact, but the sides of the top part of the lid have come off sometime in the last 100+years.
Feel free to make a counter offer. I'll take fair ones into consideration.
