This item is a nice attic findCivil War Ames M1860 Light Cavalry saber. The guard has a nice patina with the number 257 stamped in it. The pommel is also stamped 257 & D.R.whichis David Rice found on Light Cavalry sabers dated 1863. The gripis wrapped inleather and wound with twisted brass wire. The scabbard has rust and numerous dents. The blade is lightly marked U.S.D.R. 1863 and is dark and has surface rust. Theblade measures 34&1/2\" long by 1&1/8\" wide. A very nice looking sword.
