Condition: Exterior as shown in photos, with wear at corners and spine ends, etc. Book is firmly bound. Text is clean and complete, with foxing (heavier in some places) and some edgewear on page 261/262 (see pictures). Pencil scribbles inside front and back covers, a few handwritten notes in text. Overall good shape for 151 years old.

DESCRIPTION:
This is a 151-year old wonder book of cooking recipes, home cures and remedies, practical instructions and general advice for an incredible range of daily wants, published by the author himself. It came out immediately after the Civil War, at a time when Americans were dreaming of starting new lives on the Western frontier. To homesteaders and their kin, this book was like a bible of self-reliance. No good pioneer's home would have been without its own treasured copy.
The largest portion of the book is devoted to cures and remedies, with treatments for numerous ailments ranging from simple first-aid to diseases like tuberculosis and cancer. Many of these are what would be called "folk remedies." Traditional medicines and preparations handed down by word of mouth. The author calls them "Old Grandmother prescriptions." He writes:
Many persons will stick up their noses at these "Old Grandmother prescriptions," but I will tell many "upstart Physicians" that our grandmothers are carrying more information out of the world by their deaths, than will ever be possessed by this class of "sniffers," and I really thank God, so do thousands of others, that He has enabled me, in this work, to reclaim such an amount of it for the benefit of the world.
Many, many of these folk remedies employ herbal or botanical components. The book has no section specifically labeled "Herbal Remedies," but they can be found throughout the Medical section. I personally browsed the Medical section and found the following herbal/botanicals specified in the cures:

Whether the remedies work or not, I don't know. Try them at your own risk. But this is the kind of household medical advice people had at their disposal back in 1866. In some instances, the author recommends certain medicines and elixirs of the day, but what sets this book apart is that he doesn't merely say "take this," he actually explains what the stuff is made of and how it should be administered or applied -- often even telling the reader how to make his own medicine for less money than the store-bought versions.
The "Saloon Department" is equally fascinating. Here, the author explains in detail how to make a number of beers, ciders, sodas and other potables. For example, "Lemon Beer" was apparently popular in the 1860s -- just think, with this book you can brew your own and actually sample a drink (or several) that Civil War soldiers probably imbibed.
Between the "Grocers Department" and the "Bakers' Department," you can also find recipes for a variety of breads, cakes and jellies, how to preserve fruits and meats, and more. With this book, you can prepare yourself a Civil War era feast. A book like this would no doubt come in very handy for Civil War re-enactors, or for writers who wish to add period authenticity to their work.
Horse owners and equestrians will be very interested in the "Farriers' Section" of DR. CHASE'S RECIPES. He prescribes a number of cures and treatments for horse ailments and disabilities, even going out of his way to include a section on how to treat a horse with a broken leg as an alternative to shooting it. Dr. Chase clearly loved horses, and he writes, "Let every fair means be tried, before you consent to take the life, even of a broken-legged horse."
The other portions of the book include a number of tips and techniques for blacksmithing, tinning, cabinet-making, paint-making and more. These sections would undoubtedly appeal to metalworkers, woodworkers, craftspeople and especially folks restoring period homes who are looking for period paints and finishes.
Dr. Chase himself cites some of his reasons for writing this book:
First, much of the information contained in "Dr. Chase's Recipes; or Information for Everybody," has never before been published, and is adapted to everyday use. Second, the Author, having carried on the Drug and Grocery business for a number of years, read Medicine, after being thirty-eight years of age, and graduated as a physician to qualify himself for the work he was undertaking; for, having been familiar with some of the Recipes, adapted to these branches of the trade, more than twenty years, he began in '56, to publish them in a pamphlet of only a few pages, since which time he has been traveling between New York and Iowa, selling the work and Prescribing ...
His travels have brought him in contact with all classes of Professional and Business men, Mechanics, Farriers and Farmers, thus enabling him to obtain from them, many additional items, always having had his note book with him, and whenever a prescription was given before him, or a remark made, that would have a practical bearing, it has been noted, and at the first opportunity tested, then if good, written out in plain language expressly for the next edition of this work. In this way this mass of information has been collected and ought to take away an objection which some persons have raised: "It is too much for one man to know!" because they did not realize that the work had been made up from others as well as the Author's actual every day experience, instead of from untried books ...
DR. CHASE'S RECIPES is a historical and cultural time-capsule of rare information about how people in the Civil War era lived, worked, ate and drank. It is loaded with recipes, formulas, cures, etc. -- so detailed, so complete, that you can actually reproduce those foodstuffs, medicines, drinks, etc. today, 150 years later (again, at your own risk).
