Price: US $1704.00

\"Collins\" M1852 naval officer sword & scabbard, dtd 1862, sold through \"Gorham\"

Offered is an original \"Collins & Co/Hartford/Conn\" Model 1852 naval officer sword & scabbard, dated 1862, sold through \"Gorham & Co/Providence/R.I.\"  An absolutely stunning set, showing very little use and no abuse.  Frosted etching is almost perfect, as strong and sharp as the day it was done!  Blade retains its original edge with no post manufacture sharpening and no nicks.  Blade tapes to approximately 29 inches.  No rust.  Areas of the blade without etching are mirror bright.  There is no evidence this piece has been post manufacture polished.  Only mar to the blade is at the tip area, showing very fine speckling for about the last four inches on both sides - see photos.  Collins stamp and date are perfectly done on the left ricasso flat, with \"Gorham\'s\" logo etched on the opposite side - see photos.  Leather buffer is missing from the ricasso.   Quillon, guard, pommel cap, and handle are all solidly attached, save for just the slightest play against the sword.  Handle retains 98% of its original sharkskin wrap and 100% of its tightly wrapped wire.  Dolphin head quillon is correctly attached as a separate piece.  Scabbard in like condition.  Leather  is smooth, with scattered areas of light surface crazing, but no cracks on chipping.  Mounts are solidly attached and retain all screws.  Scabbard has no weak spots; it will no bend or break with normal handling.  This set would be damn hard to improve on - see photos.
