CONSOLIDATED FREIGHTWAYS 1950s \'BUBBLENOSE\' #4658 FREIGHTLINER 8x10 GLOSSY PHOTO
Price: US $9.99

This photo is an outstanding high quality new 8” x 10” black & white glossy photo reproduction of a CONSOLIDATED FREIGHTWAYS early 1950s “BUBBLENOSE” FREIGHTLINER Tandem Tractor #4658. This photo is enlarged from a smaller personal photo, and while not as sharp and clear as most of my photos, it is still a very nice photo. An imperfection in the lower left corner can be seen, along with a repaired tear that is visible in the driver’s lower leg.

I have a similar photo of William Lewis standing in front of CF #4660 Freightliner. If you have any interest, please contact me.

”SAMPLE” will not appear on the actual photo, it is only on the scanned image.

The COE sleeper tractor in this photo is most likely a “Bubblenose” Model 800, first produced in 1948 only in the day cab version. Leland James began to convert the CF fleet to the 91-inch cab with a narrow 28-inch integral sleeper compartment in 1950. My original photo has “Father: William Jack Lewis” written on the back. Location of the photo is unknown, but my original photo came from Oregon. This #4658 Freightliner was pulling a tandem axle semi-trailer with a side door on the right front corner. This full 8x10 photo is borderless.

NOTE: IF YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PHOTO or Driver WILLIAM LEWIS, PLEASE CONTACT ME. Thanks!

HISTORY OF CONSOLIDATED FREIGHTWAYS: Consolidated Truck Lines, Inc. was started in 1929 by founder Leland James and a group of men who combined four trucking operations, then becoming Consolidated Freightways, Inc. (CF) in 1939. To meet the special needs of CF, about 20 experimental trucks were built between 1937 and 1939 by the CF mechanics in the Portland shops. These were often called “Monkey Ward” Freightliners because to some they looked like they were made from mail order parts. Production of the first trucks by Freightways Manufacturing began in August 1940 in the Salt Lake City shops. In 1942 they took on the name of the Freightliner Corporation. The early Freightliners were nicknamed “Shovelnose” COE’s because of the distinctive shape of their nose. Truck production stopped in 1944 during WWII. Also in 1944, the Freightliner shops were moved to Portland. A new plant was then built in Portland, opening in 1947 with Ken Self from the Spokane shop as production manager. Some 30 ‘Shovelnose’ Freightliners were manufactured in 1947, and a new model Model 800 “Bubblenose” was introduced in 1948. Most early Freightliners were manufactured strictly for Consolidated Freightways, but to increase production and bring down unit costs, an exclusive sales and service agreement in 1951 with White Motor Corporation provided a nationwide network for the White-Freightliner which lasted almost a quarter century.
