GEORGE VINER ELLIS & G. H. FORDLONDON: Smith, Elder & Co., 1876 [published date: 1876]. Rare Stated Second edition. ELEPHANT FOLIO 22.5\" x 15\" inches (LxB). Pp. vi pages + fifty-eight tinted colour lithograph plates, though the title is dated 1876, all the plates are from the first edition & dated between 1863 and 1867 in the margins below images.Fine original contemporary 3/4 black morocco leather boards, gilt decorated spine sympathetically rebacked in antique style, using matching black calf leather, gilt decorated spine with 5 raised bands, Large black gilt lettered morocco label affixed onto the front board (as issued). The plates printed in colours by Mintern Bros. The descriptive letter-press volume which was issued in a small 8vo size - 9\" x 6\"; is missing. George Ellis and his artist Ford chose the comparatively new method of chromolithography for the reproduction of their imperial folio atlas of fifty-eight plates. The printing of such complex plates in color was difficult, as chromolithography was still in a developmental stage; the plates were printed between 1863 and 1867, with four to seven finished each year. The plates are exceptional for accuracy and clarity; they are also exceptional for their aesthetic depiction of the dead\" Anatomy as Art: the Dean Edell Collection No. 197. A fine anatomical Atlas of the period.\" Dawson, Cat. 91, 2139. \"The school of anatomy at University College, London, in the first thirty-five years of its existence , produced remarkable series of illustrated anatomical lithographic plates, useful alike to students, as in J. Quain\'s Elements of anatomy, and to practising surgeons, as in R. Quain\'s Arteries, J. Quin\'s and Winlson\'s Anatomical Plates, Maclise\'s Surgical anatomy, Ellis\'s Dissections. Early in the same period Charles Bell, who remained only a short time at University College, produced work on the hand and on expression. During this period also Carswell and Marshall were productive ion the field of moroffer anatomy and in anatomy respectively.\". A classic work. Preface by the author at the start States: These Anatomical Plates exemplify the method of dissecting practised in University College, London ; and they are designed to serve both as patterns for the Student to copy in his dissections, and as aids to him in after-study. - - For the purpose of carrying out the pictorial representation of dissections the part of the human Body to be illustrated is divided into suitable stages or regions ; and the muscles, blood vessels, and nerves of each region are shown in layers in the natural order of succession, so that their mutual connections may be brought before the eye at one and the same time. - - The Illustrations comprise views of the Head and Neck, the upper Limb, the Perinaeum, the Abdominal Parietes, the Pelvis, and the lower Limb ; and they are accompanied by a concise description of the objects displayed in each Plate, with a short notice of the practical applications of Anatomical facts to Surgery. All the Figures are drawn of life-size from actual dissections ; and they are printed in colours with the object of making them as true pictures as possible of Nature, and more serviceable as copies for the Student to imitate. Only such dissections were prepared for the Drawings as may be commonly seen in the practical Anatomy Boom ; and the minute detail, whose counterpart the Student with average manual dexterity could not produce without some difficulty and loss of time, was intentionally omitted. Delineations of the ligaments, the viscera of the cavities of the Body, and the organs of the Senses, are not included in the Plates now published. - - The labour connected with this Work was divided between its two authors, that part being apportioned to each which he was best fitted by previous knowledge and experience to execute. To Mr. Ford were assigned the original Drawings, and the chromo-lithography; and to him is due the merit of portraying with so much effect and exactness the natural appearance of the parts dissected. Upon me rests the responsibility of the selection of the Illustrations, the fidelity of the dissections, and the accuracy of the whole. - - During the progress of this undertaking, which has been continued through several years, other engagements have necessitated my having recourse occasionally to the senior Students of the College for the help of their hands. To those Students, and to Mr. Samuel Onley in particular, I gladly offer my thanks for their assistance. And to Mr. J. S. Cluff, Demonstrator of Anatomy, I am greatly indebted for the valuable aid he has afforded me at all times. - - Before closing this retrospect of the task now finished, I may advert to the difficulties attendant on the printing in colours of such complicated Figures, and to the successful way in which they have been overcome by Mr. West - - GEORGE VINER ELLIS. - UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, LONDON, May 1st, 1876.\"

George Viner Ellis (1812-1900), \"born near Gloucester, Ellis was apprenticed to a doctor in Gloucester and then entered University College, London, qualifying MRCS in 1835; he was elected FRCS at the first elections in 1843. Soon after qualifying he became Demonstrator in Anatomy at University College under Richard Quain and also spent vacations working in anatomy in Paris or Berlin. He never attempted to become a surgeon but remained in anatomy at University College, succeeding Quain as Professor of Descriptive Anatomy in 1850 and retiring in 1877. He held no official posts outside University College. He retired to Gloucester where he taught older boys in a night school and applied himself to gardening, particularly growing apples. He died in 1900, having been blind for the last two or three years of his life. - - Ellis was perhaps the first pure anatomist. His lectures made no attempt to make the dry subject more interesting but were well accepted by students because they stated clearly what had to be learn for examinations. He was a firm disciplinarian in his own classes and was once called in to quell misbehaviour in Grant\'s class. He hated smoking. Smoking in the dissecting room was firmly forofferden until a group of students petitioned the Council for leave to purify the atmosphere of the practical anatomy rooms with tobacco; the corpses at that time were not preserved. Ellis immediately threatened to resign and the sanction was rescinded. He was not overclean in his habits and it was not always appreciated, when he showed his approval for an industrious piece of dissecting by patting the student on the shoulder with hands \'too visibly subdued to that they worked in\'. In a college epitaph he was described as: Beloved by few and feared by many, Discoverer of the corrugator ani. - - Early in his career he published Demonstrations of anatomy and together with Sharpey he was editor of Quain\'s Elements of Anatomy after 1856. With Ford, an artist, Ellis published in 1867 Illustrations of dissections in two volumes, one volume consisting of plates drawn by Ford from dissections by Ellis.\" O\'Connor, W.J.: Founders of British Physiology (1988). - - Hirsch-H.
