EARLY AMERICAN SILVER HILTED NAVAL OFFICERS DIRK C.1780-1820
Price: US $242.50
Up for offer is a very old circa 1780-1820 presumably American Naval officers dirk. The dirk measures 8.5 inches in length. The dirk exhibits some period wear. The blade is has some oxidation and heavier pitting towards to tip. There is a motto on the blade that appears to read, \"If you run foul of me, you run foul of ??\". The last word is hard for me to make out due to the oxidation/pitting on the blade. There is also a floral or leaf type motif on opposite side of blade. The hilt is certainly silver although no hallmarks are present. The handle is made of bone with a few tight age cracks and some wear. The silver guard has some play. Overall a very neat little dirk. A very similar dirk is pictured on page 61 of the book Small arms of the sea services by Colonel R. Rankin.
