JOANIES VOTED #1 ESTATE sales TEN YEARS AND RUNNING!

Hello, thank you for having a look at our sales. This week we are very excited to be offering the what I believe to be one of our most important sale sales to date, and our Last large sale of the season. This sale offers a wide variety of fine and important Chinese works of art including bronzes, jades, paintings and other rarely found scholarly objects.

The sale features items from two important estate collections, along with some last porcelain examples from the Michael Vermeer collection. We have featured items from both these estate collections in the past and now the estate has asked us to sell the remainder of the collections. They include items from the estate of Mr. H.H Pao of Toronto who owned a high-end shop in the famous Four Seasons hotel in Toronto for several years throughout the 1980s to 1990s period. Mr. Pao was a dear friend whom was considered one of North America’s top experts and scholars in many categories of antique Chinese art. The sale also includes jades and other early Chinese bronze and archaic items from the estate of A Abraham. Mr. Abraham was a highly respected Asian Arts dealer and collector in the 1950-70’s period. He frequently travelled to China, Hong Kong, New York, and London on buying trips at the time. Abraham owned the Imperial Jade shop in the famous King Edward hotel in Toronto until his retirement in the year 1976, 40 years ago. When the shop closed many of the pieces went to Sotheby’s in New York for sale. Abraham kept some of his most favorite examples that we are now offering for sale. Most of the pieces have been in storage since the shop closed in 1976 and have not seen the light of day until now.

Up for sale is a very rare Chinese Zhou Dynasty archaic bronze figural wine vessel. This wine vessel is an astonishing and I believe important find. The wine cup has excellent provenance as seen being from the important collection of George Taber. Mr. Taber was a very well-known and very knowledgeable Chinese art collector that was active in the earlier 1900s period. Mr. Taber is well known for acquiring an astonishing amount of Imperial items around the fall of the Qing dynasty, many with direct provenance to the Imperial palaces, the last Emperor Henry Pu Yi, and Empress Dowager. A major part of this collection, including this cup were exhibited by the Carnegie Museum. Many pieces from Taber’s collection have been published over the years, and many others have sold at high-end sales, including many for some astonishing amounts. As you can see the wine vessel comes with a print out of an original catalogue issued in 1937 featuring the exhibition, George Taber, and this amazing wine vessel that is also featured in a picture in the add as seen. The provenance does not get any better than this! The cup also has museum inventory numbers, along with George Taber collection numbers to the inner lid so its history is perfectly traceable.

The wine vessel has a very unique design as documented in the catalogue being a “sacred-cow” form. The wine vessel has inscribed Chinese archaic characters to the inner base and inner lid. The vessel shows its early age as seen. The vessel is overall in substantially fine and intact condition with no missing pieces, holes, cracks, or other damage. The cup displays very nicely measuring 8 1/2 inches long, by 2 3/4 inches wide, by 5 1/2 inches tall. The wine vessel with lid weights 1496 grams.

I believe this is likely one of the only actual authentic Zhou dynasty bronzes that has ever been offered on , mostly with this strong museum provenance. It is likely a piece that should be reserved for an important high-end sale, however as our good customers know we like to offer All our finest and rarest treasures to our great customers without exception. It’s well worth taking some time to figure out what this wine vessel would presently be worth. I highly doubt the opportunity to acquire such an example will arise again any time soon! To be perfectly clear as our sales have run for over a decade here online this wine vessel is being sold to the highest buyer without reserve.
