Extremely Rare Carpenter Cast Iron 3 Piece Floor Train Set - Patented 1880
Price: US $431.00

Description:

This isan extremely neat and rare 3 piece cast iron floor train attributed toCarpenter (locomotive and two passenger cars). The locomotive is embossed with a June 1880 patent date (see photos). There are two wood spacers on each axle topush the wheels out beyond the base of the cars (because the top of wheelsextends above the base of the train cars). The wood spacers are red on the locomotive and black on the passengercars. The passenger cars have small castiron seats inside of each window (see photos). The locomotive does not have acow catcher or tender (by design). Thisone is so rare it is not in Rick Ralston’s book on cast iron floor trains. I consulted Rick Ralston and he has only seenthe locomotive once before (he has it) and he had NEVER seen the passenger carsbefore. He believes the passenger carsare one of a kind…it could be a prototype that proved to be a bit too complexof a design for its price point (with the seats on the passenger cars, woodspacer, etc.). Mr. Ralston agrees it islikely by Carpenter. The locomotive hehas also did not come with a tender and it came with two small gondolas…so thisthree piece set is likely complete (i.e. not missing a tender). You will likely never see this train againafter this. Wow!

Size:

Loco approx.2.75” long

Passengercars approx. 3.25”long each

Fully assembledapprox. 9.5” long

Condition:

Good originalpaint considering it was made in 1880….with relatively minor lossescommensurate with age and light play. In the areas of paint loss there is minorsurface oxidation but not deep pitting. Other than a very small chip out of the front of the locomotive (just in front of the smokestack) there are nocracks, breaks, or repairs to the cast iron. The pin couplers are present and possibly original.
