  • Sherman Fairchild was one of the most significant inventors of the modern era and undoubtedly one of the greatest American entrepreneurs of all time. His contributions to society are so wide spread it would be hard to see an area of technology where he wasn’t an influence. Companies such as  Fairchild Aircraft, Fairchild Stratos, Fairchild Hiller, Fairchild Industries, Fairchild Camera and Instrument, Fairchild Semiconductor, and Fairchild Recording, to name a few, all were leading innovators in their respective fields. Sherman Fairchild was also a co-founder of Pan American Airlines and American Airlines as well as Director of IBM, a company his father founded..

In the 1930’s one of Fairchild’s pet projects was Fairchild Recording. He was keen on developing new technology for the budding broadcast and recording industries, which he did. Today components such as the 660/670 compressor/limiter and the numerous  equalizers, mixing consoles, line amps, recording lathes, phono cartridge, and broadcast turntables have set a standard of excellence few components have ever achieved. Much of the technology developed by Fairchild Recording was instrumental in the progression of the recording industry and helped lay the foundation of hi fidelity sound.

In the mid 1950’s Tung-Sol developed the 6550 output tube which sent every hi-fidelity audio equipment manufacturer into design mode to take advantage of this new tube’s high output and desirable sonic attributes.  No company took a more serious approach than Fairchild, who at the time had enormous resources to do a full scale ground-up research and develop project on this tube. Within a year the fruits of their labors bore the Fairchild 275, a true cost-no-object high fidelity power amp that many feel, even by today’s standards, the greatest 6550 based amplifier ever produced.

Fairchild recognized the demands of the 6550 tube would be great, thus they designed an innovative output & power transformer that were more than adequate for the task. The output transformer was oversized, yet because it embraced a new philosophy of “grain oriented  C-Core” design it was considerably more efficient and effective than others. It was able to provide full power output from below 20Hz to 20kHz and drive the 6550 tubes in “Ultra-Linear” operation.

Sonically the Fairchild 275 is in a league  of its own.  It has a refined and incredibly musical sound, with excellent transient response. Mid-range is sweet and lively, while the high and low ranges are represented extraordinarily well, a true rarity with most vintage 6550 amps. The 275 is a tremendous mono amp, find another for the ultimate is stereo sound!

Cosmetically amp is  clean, some scratches and paint flaking. Front right corner & right side of chassis has small dent. Tube cage emblem is missing, paint loss & glue residue in that area. Amp sounds good, though has a slight low level hum. Capacitors and other passive internal components are original. Will probably need some of these changed for optimum performance, a good suggestion for any piece of equipment approaching the 60 year mark!
