Grand and quite eye catching, genuine antique, Edwardian era toque or turban style hat. Dates from the late Edwardian era, circa 1909 to 1912, the Titanic Era. Unusual materials and construction, made of fine French silk lace fabric that is embroidered with black silk cording in fancy designs, and sewn with small blue-black beaded \"berries\" in clusters around the hat. Trimmed with a glorious double ostrich plume in pure soft white, that is large, and very fluffy and frilly. Thick black silk satin French ribbon bow on the front-side is woven through a glittering French cut steel millinery buckle with tiny sharp prongs that catch the ribbon. The lace fabric is a sort of long tube that softly drapes over the foundation like a collapsed souffle, very interesting. Lined with a black silk drawstring liner. This hat is meant to sit atop the hairstyles of the day, probably worn at a slight tilted angle but looks great straight on as well. The inside circumference is approx 21 1/2\" BUT the hat has an added black velvet padded band around almost all of the the inside circumference, (see photos) which was probably added by the original milliner to make the hat a bit smaller in size, and this can be removed if you wish to make the hat larger...although you will probably want to leave it as it is, since the hat sits very comfortably on the head. I wear a size 22 1/4\" hat and it feels like it was custom made for my head and sits securely. The outer brim is wider than the inner brim, making the hat look lower on the face or head.

CONDITION.....Shows some normal signs of age but is still VERY GOOD. Has been well stored in a smoke free, pet free home. Clean, no soiling, no dirt or odors......the foundation of the hat is sturdy, the hat handles well and certainly could be worn. The black lace fabric is supple, not dry, not torn or ripped, I found no holes. The lace does have some areas with fading of the lace but it is not faded everywhere, just in a few places. Hat is not out of shape.....Wire around the brim\'s edge is loose along a small place, but this is not terribly noticed. Silk French Ribbon is excellent, feather is excellent with dryness, no shedding or breaks, and is not yellowed or dingy it is a lovely white shade. A few of the berries or beads are loose and some are faded to a blueish black color, but most of very good. Interior is clean, lining is good, not torn or shattering. Mild wear and a few tears to the thinner and finer sheer black lace around the inside/inner brim, but not seen when wearing as it in underneath. See the photos please. Buckle is lovely, still shining and securely sewn on. Underneath the black silk ribbon and buckle, the lace is not damaged. The hat is antique, and so does show some mild sign of age and wear, but is in overall good condition. PLEASE SEE THE PHOTOS as they are part of the description.
