A fine old genuine hand carved Northwest Coast Haida Indian argillite totem pole circa 1930-40. The totem features great well carved imagery featuring an Eagle with a salmon in his talons followed by a Raven transforming into its human chiefly form. The rings on the hat the raven is wearing are known as \"skil\" rings which represent the number of potlatches the particular chief has hosted. The more rings the more importance This totem is attributed to master Haidacarver Andrew Brown ( 1879-1962) and features great imagery featuring an Eagle,Killer whale biting an Octopus or devil-fish and a Raven/ shaman transforming at the bottom. Andrew Brown was from the village of Massett on the Queen Charlotte Islands of BC, his native name was \" Owt\'iwans\" which means Big Eagle.The totem stands 4 1/2\" tall with a rectangular base measuring 1 1/3\" x 1 1/8\" square and is in very good condition with just an occasional scratch as expected with great age. The totem is unsigned and unmarked as was common for early 20th century work.. The totem is in excellent condition for its age and is fully guaranteed to be 100 % real argillite, hand carved and old . Argillite is the slate black rock that is only found in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia and all known reserves are the sole and closely guarded property of the Haida tribe.
