A very fine early Northwest Coast Nuu-chah-nulth Makah lidded domed top basket dating from the very early 1900\'s. The basket is very finely woven ( approx 22-25 stitches per inch)from split cedar bark and natural dyed bear grasses to produce the complex intricate designs that encircle the periphery and lid .The design features whales about to devour a canoe with a hunter x 2 and a complex unusual striking design on the lid featuring stacked triangle forms in red, green, pink , blue and purple . The basket measures 3 3/4\" in Daimeter and stands 2 1/2\" tall tall and is in good condition with no splits or repairs noted ,otherwise just the vegetable dyes have faded slightly over its long life which is common and expected for a basket of this age . This museum quality basket makes an excellent display item and a fine addition to anyone\'s collection.
