This outfit is the oyster white duchesse satin gown that was accounted to be Diana's favorite in the Christie's sale in 1997. It was reported that she vacillated about including this gown in the sale, but finally decided that it was better off being in the sale because of the good it could do for charity.
The royal ensemble features a strapless white gown with a beaded and embroidered bodice. The skirt features an inverted pleat at the waist and flares into an A-line skirt. The embroidery design is a floral bouquet of carnations in gold & silver scattered with pearl accents. Although this outfit had a matching bolero jacket which turned the gown into an elegant long-sleeved evening gown, the jacket was not included with Franklin Mint's ensemble.
The fashion ensemble includes 7 items: the gown, the Queen Mary tiara, a chunky freshwater pearl choker, pearl drop earrings, gold & diamond tennis bracelet, white satin clutch evening purse, & white vinyl pump shoes.
Diana wore this on several occasions & accessorized it differently. Once was a State appearance at the ÉlyséePalace in November 1988. Another was at the Wintergarden in New York in February 1989. The ensemble is meant to recreate the casual black & white portrait of Diana taken by Patrick Demarchelier.
