A gilded bronze sculpture of Buddha, dating to the 20th century or earlier. This beautiful piece captures the striking ability of Buddhist artwork to achieve simultaneous power and serenity. The surface is particularly ornate and lavishly decorated, with a care and attention to fine detail that is not often encountered in bronze sculpture of this type.
This fine Buddha is cast in south-east Asian style, seated on a decorated pedestal in the cross-legged yogic posture of satvaparyankasana, the right leg placed over the left. His right hand is lowered, long fingers pointing downward in the earth touching gesture of bhumisparshamudra, symbolizing Buddha\'s triumph over the forces of the demon Mara, who attempted to distract him from his quest for enlightenment, a common theme in south-east Asian Buddhist art. He wears an elaborate garment decorated with rosettes, extremely ornate ear decoration and a pointed crown. His eyes are half shut and he has the smile of contentment.
Height: 13 1/4 inches.
Condition: Very good. Some traces of gilding and original painted pigment remaining.
