About This Item:
This collection was found in the 1920's onGunther Island by H.H. "Doc" Stuart. This group was sold to Dr. L.L. Lewis about 1928 and many bear Dr. Lewis's collectionwriting on them. Nearly all of the artifacts recovered from Gunther Island by Doc Stuart were killed and in this frame only the center wealth blade, the upper left mahogany obsidian and the Slave Killer were found intact. Doc Stuart was a dentist and his original restoration of obsidian pieces was to fill in missing pieces with plaster of Paris and paint it black.The two side Wealth Blades have his original restoration while the center one is intact. The other broken ones were simply glued back together. The two wealth blade have had the glueseparated in the middle but I am not re-gluing those as the frameholds them in place very well.Of all the wealth blades found by Doc Stuart very few were intact. Most interesting is that nearly all the killed examples were missing one or two of the smaller pieces. This was quite intentional by the Indians as after being broken they were placed in pre-burned gravel pits with at least one piece left out. The whole coastalculture had a lot of verybizarre andpuzzling practices that still are not completely understood. The slave killer hastally marks along the back and is the only miniature (at 7" long" I have ever seen.As amazing as this collection is what really makes it important is that along with it comes several pages of Doc Stuarts original field notes. These notes describe the make up of the individual features excavated and what was found in each one. These pages of notes contain most of the major items in this collection. There is also a hand written copy from Doc Stuart of detailed information on the slave killer.
