This chronometer box has no lid, or cover, as you can see in the photos. These boxes originally had lids, but chronometers used aboard ships usually had their lids removed so that watches could be compared without having to lift the lid. Chronometers were housed in a recess in the chart table which had a hinged glass cover. Captain S T S Lecky, in his popular book "Wrinkles in Practical Navigation" writes in his discussion about chronometers that the lid should be "dispensed with", and they usually were. If the new owner of this box would like a lid made for it, contact Shipsclock Carpentry in Utah, a shop which specializes in chronometer boxes.
