Up for sale with is an incredible very large Victorian Period French Bronze of a Mother and Child. The Bronze is one of the largest and finest examples I have ever had the pleasure to sell. The Bronze depicts a beautiful woman in Period Dress and a small Child at an ancient column. The Column is inscribed C. OCTAV IMIL/ VICTO M.AI/ ANNO. XXXI which translates roughly as Gaius Octavius imilium / Victor M.AI/ year. 31 and is a memorial of the Battle of Actium in the year 31 B.C. by Roman Augustus whom later became a famous Roman Emperor. The Bronze is top notch quality throughout, much finer than my photos show and is marked F. Barbedienne Fondeur along with another marking as seen which denotes that this is a scaled down version of a larger model. I believe the original was carved in Marble and must have been very large indeed if this very large impressive beauty is a scaled down version. The markings date it from 1838-1892 and I would judge it to be c1880. I researched this Bronze and could not find any record of it anywhere or the original in Marble so I believe it is quite a Rare find indeed. The Bronze Statue is in excellent all original condition with a rich nut brown patina throughout and no damage except for the Branch which is loose and because I could not find another example I am not sure exactly where it should be placed. The Bronze is very large, perfect for a centerpiece in any home or corporate setting measuring 20 inches tall by 13-1/4 inches long, and trust me it looks much larger than that sounds ! This Statue is too large and heavy to be combined with any other item for shipping but do be sure to check all our other sales for more fantastic Bronzes and an incredible collection of Silver !
