This week we are very excited to be offering the what I believe to be one of our most important sale sales to date, and our Last large sale of the season. This sale offers a wide variety of fine and important Chinese works of art including bronzes, jades, paintings and other rarely found scholarly objects.

The sale features items from two important estate collections, along with some last porcelain examples from the Michael Vermeer collection. We have featured items from both these estate collections in the past and now the estate has asked us to sell the remainder of the collections. They include items from the estate of Mr. H.H Pao of Toronto who owned a high-end shop in the famous Four Seasons hotel in Toronto for several years throughout the 1980s to 1990s period. Mr. Pao was a dear friend whom was considered one of North America’s top experts and scholars in many categories of antique Chinese art. The sale also includes jades and other early Chinese bronze and archaic items from the estate of A Abraham. Mr. Abraham was a highly respected Asian Arts dealer and collector in the 1950-70’s period. He frequently travelled to China, Hong Kong, New York, and London on buying trips at the time. Abraham owned the Imperial Jade shop in the famous King Edward hotel in Toronto until his retirement in the year 1976, 40 years ago. When the shop closed many of the pieces went to Sotheby’s in New York for sale. Abraham kept some of his most favorite examples that we are now offering for sale. Most of the pieces have been in storage since the shop closed in 1976 and have not seen the light of day until now.

Up for sale is an extremely rare signed Chinese Imperial Xuande gilt bronze Buddha figure from the Abraham estate collection. This figure is an astonishing and I believe likely important find. The Buddha is richly gold gilt and superbly detailed throughout. The Buddha has an Imperial Xuande six-character Ming dynasty mark to the front base and I am told it likely dates to the period. Not having handled another signed example like this I will let you ultimately decide for yourself and offer accordingly.

The figure is a large size measuring 15 inches tall, by 9 1/2 inches wide, by 7 inches deep. The figure has a substantial bronze weight of 7.7 kilograms, or just over 17 pounds. The figure shows some wear to the gold gilding at the high spots as would surely be found on any example of this early age. The figure is otherwise in fine and intact condition with no missing pieces, repairs, or other damage.

It is worth noting that when I knock lightly on the base side it has a more muted dull sound than a hollow sound. This would indicate that the Buddha figure may still have old offerings inside the figure, which was very commonly done with such examples. Such relics can consist of Buddha bones, imperial trinkets, silk, and other Buddhist related objects. It is extremely hard to find an example where the interior offerings have never been disturbed or taken out. I am obviously not going to remove the base myself so I cannot guarantee the offerings are still inside for certain. But I thought it was worth mentioning that in my opinion there is likely “something” still inside the interior. I highly doubt you will see another figure or collection of this importance being offered again Without Reserve any time soon. A truly astonishing find and one of the most astonishing bronze figures I have personally ever seen.
