JOANIES CHINESE SCHOLAR ART ESTATE sale

JOANIES VOTED #1 ESTATE sales TEN YEARS AND RUNNING!

Hello, thank you for having a look at our sales. This week we are very excited to be offering the what I believe to be one of our most important sale sales to date, and our Last large sale of the season. This sale offers a wide variety of fine and important Chinese works of art including bronzes, jades, paintings and other rarely found scholarly objects.

The sale features items from two important estate collections, along with some last porcelain examples from the Michael Vermeer collection. We have featured items from both these estate collections in the past and now the estate has asked us to sell the remainder of the collections. They include items from the estate of Mr. H.H Pao of Toronto who owned a high-end shop in the famous Four Seasons hotel in Toronto for several years throughout the 1980s to 1990s period. Mr. Pao was a dear friend whom was considered one of North America’s top experts and scholars in many categories of antique Chinese art. The sale also includes jades and other early Chinese bronze and archaic items from the estate of A Abraham. Mr. Abraham was a highly respected Asian Arts dealer and collector in the 1950-70’s period. He frequently travelled to China, Hong Kong, New York, and London on buying trips at the time. Abraham owned the Imperial Jade shop in the famous King Edward hotel in Toronto until his retirement in the year 1976, 40 years ago. When the shop closed many of the pieces went to Sotheby’s in New York for sale. Abraham kept some of his most favorite examples that we are now offering for sale. Most of the pieces have been in storage since the shop closed in 1976 and have not seen the light of day until now.

Up for sale is a very impressive and large Chinese lacquered bronze Buddha figure. This figure is an amazing quality example and one of my personal favorites from the collection. The figure is very finely detailed with superb features all around including the face, body, and robe. If you look closely at the pictures you will see the front portion of the Buddha has gold and red lacquer work that is later than the back side lacquered work, in my opinion much later. I believe the front portion of this figure was re-lacquered sometime in the 19th century, likely commissioned by a wealthy temple patron at the time, which was commonly done. From the amazing quality found throughout this figure and the back early lacquer work I believe this figure likely dates from the Ming to earlier Qing period. You can also see the hand tooling to the base portion, along with the elaborately done robe that spreads out around the base of the Buddha. Unusually this kind of superb quality is only found on earlier examples, compared to later more mass produced examples with simple rounded off bases.

The figure is a large and impressive “temple” size measuring 19 inches tall, by 15 inches long, by 10 1/2 inches wide. The Buddha has a substantial bronze weight of 12.3 Kilograms, or just over 27 pounds. Such large size examples of this quality are exceedingly hard to find these days. With the major increase in Buddhist art and religion this figure is likely one of the better art investment choices one could make today. The few friends that have seen this figure in my home over the past few weeks have been both astonished and mesmerized by this figure, including myself!
