Indus Valley Pottery Bird Fertility Mother Goddess Figures - 3500 BC
Price: GB $259.00

A pair of wonderful ancient Indus Valley pottery votive statues, dating to the fourth millennium BC and produced in the city of Mehrgarh, one of the most important Neolithic sites in all of world archaeology.

These vivid, enigmatic pieces likely represent fertility goddesses. The figures are shown in confidently modelled detail with deep-set eyes, zoomorphic and a bird-like appearance. The figures are shown with their arms cupping their breasts.

These pieces date to the Mehrgarh periods IV - VI, approximately 3500-2800 BC. It is now believed that the pottery of Mehrgarh supersedes that of Mesopotamia in being the earliest known polychrome ceramics produced in human history.

The Indus Valley Culture flourished throughout large areas of modern India and Pakistan during the 3rd Millennium BC, along the flood plains of the Indus, a river flowing from its headwaters in the Himalayan Mountains. Along with Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia it was one of three early civilizations of the Old World, and of the three the most widespread. The roots of our own urban civilization lie in the remarkable developments that took place during this period. Although remote in time and place, this urban revolution, first represented by the formation of cities in areas such as the Indus Valley, must be looked upon as one of humanity\'s defining moments. This piece is a beautiful and striking remnant from this momentous period.
