Like many others I built my workstation during the 1st generation i7 days. I'm now got multiple 1366 machines in my house using then as workstations for myself and my wife for our development work. I've owned i7-920, i7-930, and i7-950 processors. After maxing the ram in my workstation at 48gb, upgrading the gfx card, and building a multi-ssd raid 0 array on an LSI card; the processor was the last possible place to squeeze more performance out of an aging system. I can tell you there is a noticeable difference in multi-tasking performance moving from the i7-950 @ 4.0ghz to this X5680 @ 4.0ghz. I originally was able to get it stable at 4.6ghz without pushing the voltage up too much, but figured I'd lean toward longevity. It's true the 1366 platform has aged and is on it's last leg. I've had to add PCIe cards to give me functionality that is built in to newer generations. However if you want to stretch a few more years out of your workhorse, I have no problem recommending this processor. It's worth noting that the guys at the Overclocknet forums have a strong contingent of die-hard 1366 fanboys that offer loads of great information about every detail of that generations processors and motherboards. If you are considering the upgrade check in over there to read up first. As always research is your friend!Read full review
