This product is useful. It basically provides 48 serial ports that can connect to console ports of networking equipment and other devices for management and configuration. The 48 serial ports can be directly connected via a straight-through cable to the console ports of Cisco equipment. Adapters may be needed for other equipment. You can telnet to a specific TCP port number to gain access to the specific console port, for example "telnet ipaddr 7001" is port 1. The ports can be configured to use SSH instead if desired. In addition, each port can be assigned an IP address directly.

We use this in our IDF and I had to have one. 500 dollar device that eliminates the blue console cable and can be managed remotely. Digital Minds took my best offer of 85 bucks and I was up an running in no time. Although it had a noisy cooling fan that I replaced for 7 bucks from Digi-Key, I was OK with the issue. With a MTBF of 21 years for the Digi CM 48 and 8 years for the new fan, I'm sure I'll get a decent lifetime out of it.
